How to find the best bulletproof equipment

Bulletproof equipment comes in all forms, shapes, sizes, materials and ratings. Picking out the best gear while keeping these numerous factors in mind can be hard. To make the process easier, here are some useful tips on how to find the best bulletproof equipment:

1. Criteria for ownership

Before you go shopping for bulletproof material, you need to know where and under what circumstances you can own it. People have the misconception that only law enforcement officers or those who are in the military are legally allowed to own bulletproof gear. However, as long as you are a law-abiding civilian and intend to use your gear for the right purposes, it isn’t difficult to acquire bulletproof equipment.

There are certain conditions that you must follow, such as not committing a crime while using the equipment. Doing so would result in legal charges. You also must not have been convicted of violent crimes to be eligible for such equipment.

2. Types of equipment

Next, you must know what type of equipment you’re looking for. For instance, bulletproof armor comes in many different types. These include:

Soft body armor: This is more comfortable than its counterparts but it does offer comparatively less protection. It is very light and flexible and perfect for those who don’t want to carry a heavy weight on their body. It can stop handgun shots but not those of rifles or steel-core handguns.

Hard body armor: Hardbody armor plates are generally used by those involved in high-risk situations where chances of being hit by a rifle shot are higher. This armor is highly preferred by police officers and combat personnel. It shields your body from knives, tasers, and other dangerous weapons. The only downside is that it is hard to conceal. Not all hard armors are rifle rated so check that out before buying.

Flexible armor: This is slowly replacing hard armor as the best armor for rifle protection. Aside from providing the same protection as hard body armor, it is also flexible, comfortable and is much lighter and it covers more of the torso.

Enhanced multi-threat armor: This is modified to provide extra protection from high-velocity handguns and shotguns. It can also protect you from strikes, slashes and tasers and is special threat resistant.

3. Rating

Every piece of bulletproof gear has a ballistic rating. You need to figure out what ballistic rating you’re looking for in your equipment. Bulletproof armor has in conjunction with (ICW) and stand-alone (STA) ratings. ICW rifle plates must be used in combination with soft body armor to achieve the highest level of ballistic rating. These plates are thin and light and help make your armor system highly adaptable.

You can wear normal soft armor for basic threats and add ICW plates for extra protection against high-level threats. STA rifle plates be used on their own to achieve official ballistic ratings. This gear is specifically designed for rifle protection and provides less coverage, leaving your torso open to attacks. If you aren’t sure which rating and protection you require, the different protection options at will help you get a better idea.

The most important rating you need to look for is the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) rating, which is the basic standard of resistance used throughout most parts of the world. Make sure that the equipment you buy is NIJ certified and has been ballistically tested.

4. Equipment material

Bulletproof equipment can be constructed from numerous types of material, and each one is suited for different types of gear and protection. The most common material used is the para-aramid fiber, which is highly resistant to damage and has good backfire signature ratings upon impact. It is much sturdier than steel but is still flexible and comfortable.

Polyethylene, which is a popular plastic, is used for making bulletproof equipment. It is highly engineered to provide maximum resistance and act as multi-hit armor when paired with hard rifle plates. It is much sturdier and less expensive than steel and is mainly used to make cost-effective body armor.

Steel is a preferred choice since it is easy to maintain, cheap and long-lasting. It is used to make only certain types of equipment since it is heavy, not flexible or easy to carry around.

There is a wide variety of bulletproof gear to choose from and for every purpose, there is one specifically designed for it. With a bit of research and looking around, it is easy to find the type of equipment you’re looking for. Keep the tips in mind to find the best bulletproof equipment for you.
