  3. His father Brent D. Barnes lives in Denton, Nebraska. His mother Jill R. Schmeeckle lives in Gothenburg with her husband John David Schmeeckle.
  4. He was 1 year younger than his fiancée Kayla Elaine Matulka. She gave birth to Jayden Matulka in 2009 and Kinzlea Greisen in 2014. The children’s father is Anthony Greisen.
  5. On May 1, 2020, he moved from Lincoln to a schoolhouse converted into a house in Malmo with Kayla, Jayden and Kinzlea.
  6. On July 12, 2020, he and Kayla shared a couple of beers with their neighbors in Malmo, Haley Nice and Nice’s husband, while the two couples’ children played on a trampoline and swing. He and Kayla told their new neighbors about their plan to get married in October 2020.
  7. On the evening of July 15, 2020, he allegedly fatally strangled Kayla and stabbed her 24 times in their bedroom in Malmo after she ended their relationship. He allegedly fatally stabbed their dog Diesel in the same room before leaving the house. On the morning of July 16, 2020, Jayden and Kinzlea found their mother and their dog dead. He was arrested later that day.
  8. On August 18, 2020, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
  9. On May 4, 2022, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, animal cruelty, evidence tampering, two counts of child abuse and two counts of use of a deadly weapon.
  10. He was 28 years old when he appeared in court before Saunders County district judge Christina Marroquin on July 18, 2022. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 85 to 106 years more. His attorney Matt McDonald said he plans to appeal.
