Kayla Mae Bergom, 27, of Belle Plaine, Benton County, Iowa, United States started working as a jailer at the Tama County Jail in Toledo, Tama County, Iowa in 2019. While employed there, she allegedly had sex with a male inmate, 29, at least three times.
In October 2020, Bergom and the inmate allegedly engaged in sex acts in a utility closet inside the jail. They also allegedly had sex in the jail’s recreation yard in September 2020 and in April 2021.
After receiving a tip from a Tama County employee accusing Bergom of sexual misconduct, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation opened an investigation, which concluded in March 2022. On April 20, 2022, Tama County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested her.
On April 21, 2022, Bergom posted bond and was released. After being charged with three counts of sexual misconduct with an offender, she immediately resigned from the Tama County Jail.
In May 2022, Bergom pleaded not guilty to all three counts of sexual misconduct. If convicted, she faces up to six years in state prison.
Bergom’s trial is set for August 12, 2022. Aside from Belle Plaine, she has lived in other parts of Iowa including Vinton and Jesup.
