Once inside the school, Duran started asking families about their children. When school administrators confronted him, he claimed to be the parent of a girl, 5, one of the students.

Duran then spoke with the girl in one of the classrooms. There were other people in the classroom and the rest of the building.

During the open house, Duran was never alone with the girl. Her real parents saw him asking questions of their daughter and called 911.

When Xenia Police Department officers arrived, Duran told them that he was trying to go to Kettering Health Greene Memorial in Xenia. He later admitted he went to the kindergarten school to “talk to little kids” and voluntarily went to the Xenia Police Division.

While waiting to be interviewed, Duran picked up a pen on the table and tried to stab a male police officer, who defended himself and took the Fairborn man into custody. Neither the suspect nor the officer was injured.

During the interview, Duran admitted that he went to the St. Brigid Catholic School to kidnap one of the children attending the open house and that he planned to give a child a Starbust candy laced with tranquilizers but he did not give candy to any child during the open house. He also told the officers that he prefers children aged 5 to 13.
