Singh Tejinder, 37, of Union City, Alameda County, California, United States and Krishnan Jayaraman, 51, of Fremont, Alameda County are both U.S. citizens of Indian descent. They did not know each other before their encounter at a Taco Bell in Fremont on August 21, 2022.
Jayaraman and Tejinder were both in line inside the fast-food restaurant when the latter decided to hurl racist slurs against the former. The victim quietly filmed the rant, which lasted for almost 8 minutes.
“The f–k your bean burrito looking at?” Tejinder told Jayaraman. “Disgusting, bro. Maybe wear some socks. Nobody wants to see your ugly ass feet. Disgusting. You people are f——g ugly.”
After implying that Jayaraman does not eat beef, Tejinder told the Taco Bell employees behind the counter that Jayaraman ordered “cow s–t”. The Union resident told his fellow Indian, “You look nasty.”
“Don’t come out in public like this again,” Tejinder continued. “Sincerely, no one comes in public like this, dirty Hindu.”
In broken Spanish, Tejinder placed an order and explicitly told the cashier that he wanted a beef meal. He then berated Jayaraman for being vegetarian and called him a “dirty ass Hindu”.
“Walking around with your f—–g toes out,” Tejinder told Jayaraman. “B—h, this ain’t India. You f—–d India up. You’re f—–g America up.”
Jayaraman did not respond but he just kept recording. Even after receiving his order, he stayed inside the fast-food restaurant and waited for the Fremont Police Department officers to arrive.
“Indian people are a joke,” Tejinder said. “Look at this nasty s–t.”
Aside from spewing anti-Hindu speech, Tejinder also threw dollars on Jayaraman’s face and spat everywhere. The Union City resident later spoke Punjabi and expressed his hatred against India’s third prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh on October 31, 1984.
According to Jayaraman, it was a Taco Bell supervisor who called the police. However, the Fremont resident complained about the fast-food restaurant’s employees who did not step in to deescalate.
“So many of these employees were so busy but they’re in the front,” Jayaraman told ABC News. “They’re seeing him abusing me so I thought, at least they will ask him to leave the establishment, which is probably what most franchises would do. I mean, I don’t know what the policies of Taco Bell are.”
That day, the Fremont Police Department officers who responded did not find enough evidence to confirm a hate crime so they did not arrest Tejinder. But on August 29, 2022, he was charged with a hate crime in violation of civil rights, assault and disturbing the peace by offensive language although he has yet to be arrested.
Glen Bell founded Taco Bell in 1962 in Downey, Los Angeles County, California. It is a chain of fast food restaurants that serve burritos, nachos, quesadillas, tacos and other Mexican-inspired foods.
Taco Bell was part of product placement for “Demolition Man“, which was released on October 8, 1993. Directed by Marco Brambilla, the science fiction action film starred Sandra Bullock, Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Nigel Hawthorne.
