Slidell, Louisiana’s Sloane Signal-Debose pleads guilty to misappropriating military veteran’s funds

Sloane Marie Signal-DeBose, 51, of Slidell, Louisiana, United States previously lived in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA, in Laurel, Maryland, in Chicago, Illinois, USA and in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. Aside from Slidell, she has lived in other parts of Louisiana including New Orleans and Gonzales.

From March 16, 2016 to September 10, 2018, Signal-DeBose was the appointed fiduciary for a male military veteran. Neither the veteran’s name nor the relationship between the two was disclosed.

In April 2016, Signal-DeBose used the funds from his account to open a certificate of deposit, which then had a balance of $109,217.38. She used the funds as collateral for a loan, transferred the loan proceeds to her accounts and used them to partially pay a property titled only in her name.

Moreover, Signal-DeBose took at least $6,598.05 from the veteran’s funds to pay contractors working on her home. Using false records, she misled the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs by claiming that the money was spent on a property owned by the veteran.

On May 23, 2022, Signal-DeBose was charged with misappropriating funds from a veteran. On October 18, 2022, she pleaded guilty to the charge and agreed to pay $115,815 in restitution to the veteran.

On February 15, 2023, Signal-DeBose will attend the sentencing hearing. She is facing up to 5 years in prison, up to 3 years of supervised release after release from prison, a mandatory $100 special assessment fee and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain to her or the gross loss to any victims.
