Brooklyn, New York City’s Reginald Matthews punched elderly man, shoplifted clothing from Primark?

Reginald Matthews, 31, of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States has multiple prior arrests dating back to 2007. A lot of the arrests were related to domestic violence.

On October 27, 2022, Matthews was playing music from his speaker while on a subway train in Manhattan, New York City. He was with a black female.


At around 3:30 p.m., as the southbound train was approaching the 96th Street station, a white male passenger, 78, asked Matthews to lower the volume of music playing from his speaker. Matthews and his female companion proceeded to punch the elderly man’s face multiple times.

The victim got off the train with bruises and lacerations on his face. Medics transported him to Mount Sinai Morningside in New York City in stable condition.

Williams and his female companion were able to exit the train without being arrested. Someone took photos of them and shared them with the New York City Police Department.


Later that day, Matthews was arrested after shoplifting nearly $1,000 worth of clothing from a Primark department store in Brooklyn. He was charged with for petit larceny.

While in custody, Matthews was linked to the subway incident and charged with assault on a victim 65 or older. Following an arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, he was held on a $30,000 bond or $15,000 cash bail.

Matthews is being held at Rikers Island in New York City pending his next court appearance. Meanwhile, the female suspect is still at large.
