Walmart manager Andre Marcus Bing shoots 10 people in Chesapeake, Virginia

Andre Marcus Bing of Chesapeake, Virginia, United States has died. He was 31.

In 2010, Bing started working for Walmart. As the overnight team lead at the Walmart Supercenter on Sam’s Circle in Chesapeake, he supervised employees who stock the store while it is closed.

At 10:12 p.m. on November 22, 2022, Bing opened fire inside his workplace in Walmart. He used a pistol.

Bing fatally shot Tyneka Johnson, 22, of Portsmouth, Virginia and Chesapeake residents Randall Blevins, 70, Kellie Pyle, 52, Lorenzo Gamble, 43, Brian Pendleton, 39, and Fernando Chavez-Barron, 16. Six other victims were also wounded.

At 10:15 p.m., Chesapeake Police Department officers responded to a reported active shooter situation and confirmed an emergency response at the store. Before the officers arrived, Bing fatally shot himself.

Rescue and tactical teams arrived at the Walmart and provided life-saving measures to the victims. A reunification center was set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center for the immediate family and emergency contacts for people who were in the store.

During the shooting, Betsy Umphlett sent text messages from inside the Walmart to her daughter Joetta Jeffery. Umphlett is in shock although she was not injured.

“I’m crying,” Jeffery told CNN. “I’m shaking. I had just talked to her about buying turkeys for Thanksgiving then this text came in.”

The wounded victims are being treated at the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Two of them were in critical condition.

Before Bing was identified as the gunman, Chesapeake Police Department public information officer Leo Kosinski said they believe the number of deaths is “less than 10”. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from Washington, D.C., USA is assisting with the investigation.
