Detroit, Michigan’s Jarred Brooks is new ONE Strawweight World Champion, decisions Joshua Pacio

“The Monkey God” Jarred Brooks, 29, is the new mixed martial arts champion of ONE Championship in the strawweight division. Fighting out of Detroit, Michigan, United States, he was one of the winners at “ONE 164“.

Featuring three Muay Thai contests and seven MMA matches, “ONE 164” was held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on December 3, 2022. In the main event of the evening, Brooks challenged then reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio, 26, who trains at Team Lakay in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines.


Justin Brown served as the referee of the title bout. After five five-minute rounds, he raised the hand of Brooks, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

This makes Brooks the sixth person to reign as the ONE Strawweight World Champion. Pacio held the title from September 22, 2018 to January 19, 2019 and from April 12, 2019 to December 3, 2022.

The other four former ONE Strawweight World Champions are Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke, 44, of Trang, Thailand, Yoshitaka Naito, 38, of Matsudo, Japan, Alex Silva, 40, of Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil and Yosuke Saruta, 35, of Tokyo, Japan. Naito held the title from May 27, 2016 to December 9, 2017 and from May 12, 2018 to September 22, 2018.


Born and raised in Warsaw, Indiana, USA, Brooks started wrestling when he was young. He attended the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, USA.

Brooks competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship from 2017 to 2018. When he made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE” NextGen III” on November 26, 2021 in Kallang, Singapore, he submitted Pacio’s Team Lakay teammate “Thunder Kid” Lito Adiwang, 29.

On January 28, 2022, Brooks defeated Koha “Hiroba” Minowa, 23, of Saitama, Japan via unanimous decision at “ONE: Only the Brave” in Kallang, Singapore. On April 22, 2022, the Warsaw native went back to Kallang where he defeated “Little Giant” Bokang Masunyane, 28, of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa via technical submission via rear-naked choke at “ONE 156“.

“It’s been a really rough experience in this training camp,” Brooks said during the pre-fight press conference in front of the media and Pacio’s fans on November 29, 2022. “But I’m going to show it all against your boy this Saturday.”
