Abubakar Sharrif, 23, of Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont, United States has died. He was 23.
Just before 3:00 a.m. on December 4, 2022, two groups got into a fight at Piesanos Restaurant on Main Street in Burlington. The brawl involved five to 10 people including Sharrif and Von C. Simmonds, 40, of ANEW Place, a homeless services agency in Burlington.
The two groups threw chairs and knocked over tables. The fight escalated when Simmonds went behind a kitchen counter and grabbed a knife.
Simmonds allegedly stabbed Sharrif through the chest. The knife punctured the victim’s lung and part of his heart.
At 3:08 a.m., Burlington Police Department officers arrived at Piesanos Restaurant and found Sharrif bleeding heavily from stab wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
On December 8, 2022, Simmonds was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was booked into Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Franklin County, Vermont without bail.
On December 9, 2022, Simmonds was arraigned at the Chittenden Superior Courthouse in Burlington. He pleaded not guilty.
Burlington was organized as a town in 1785 and incorporated as a city in 1865. In 2015, it became the first city in the U.S. to run entirely on renewable energy.
Miro Weinberger, 52, is the 42nd and incumbent mayor of Burlington. Actors Will Lyman, 74, and Field Cate, 25, were both born in the city.
