Jose Rodolfo Villarreal-Hernandez, 44, was born in Mexico. He was a leader of the drug cartel and organized crime syndicate Cártel de los Beltrán Leyva.
On the evening of May 22, 2013, two Mexican assassins fatally shot Juan Jesús Guerrero Chapa in Southlake, Texas, United States. The assassins were hired by Villarreal-Hernandez.
A former cartel lawyer, Guerrero became an informant cooperating with law enforcement in the U.S. After being shot by the two assassins, he was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to investigators, Villarreal-Hernandez had a personal grudge against Guerrero. The former went into hiding after the assassination of the latter.
In October 2020, Villareal-Hernandez was included in the Federal Bureau of Investigation‘s 10 most wanted fugitives list. On January 7, 2023, he was found in Atizapán de Zaragoza, Mexico.
Villarreal-Hernandez was arrested by Secretaría de Marina José Rafael Ojeda Durán, 68, and agents from the Fiscalía General de la República‘s Agencia de Investigación Criminal with support from the Coordinación Nacional Antisecuestro. Villarreal-Hernandez is being held in Mexico pending extradition to the U.S.
