Jerry Gilland of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, United States has died. He was 77.
Gilland and Ellen Gilland, 76, got married in 1969. Before moving to New Smyrna Beach, they lived in other parts of Florida including Mount Plymouth, Sorrento and Orlando.
Jerry spent his final days at AdventHealth Daytona Beach in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was terminally ill and was on the 11th floor of the hospital where most patients are on ventilators.
In December 2022, Jerry and Ellen made a pact to go through with a murder-suicide if his health continued to deteriorate. The original plan was for her to bring a a gun into the hospital and let him do the shooting.
However, Jerry was too weak. At around 11:30 a.m. on January 21, 2023, the Daytona Beach Police Department got a call about a shooting at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.
Officers found Ellen had shot Jerry and confined herself to his room. She never put the gun down until she was arrested at around 3:00 p.m.
No staff or other patients were injured in the hospital. Ellen was booked into the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach and is expected to be charged with first-degree murder.
AdventHealth Daytona Beach is formerly called Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. Its two outpatient facilities give patients an alternative choice for certain treatments.
The visiting hours in the hospital and its intensive care unit and chapel are 24 hours a day. The hospital offers free on-site parking with complimentary valet parking.
