Dadeville, Alabama’s Phil Dowdell fatally shot; Footballer signed with Jacksonville State University

Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell of Dadeville, Tallapoosa County, Alabama, United States has died. He was 18.

A senior student at Dadeville High School on Weldon Street in Dadeville, Dowdell was a wide receiver and a cornerback. He had signed with Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Calhoun County, Alabama.

Aside from football, Dowdell also played basketball. He was 5’11” tall and his registered weight was 165 pounds.

Dowdell is Alexis Dowdell‘s older brother. They are Annette Allen‘s grandchildren.

Allen told the Montgomery Advertiser that Phil was “a very, very humble child” who “never messed with anybody.” She added that he “always had a smile on his face”.

On the evening of April 15, 2023, Alexis celebrated her 16th birthday at a dance studio in Dadeville. Phil and several teenagers attended the party.

At around 10:30 p.m., someone opened fire at the party, fatally shooting Phil and three others and injuring 15 teenagers and 13 adults including his mother. The wounded teenagers were treated for gunshot wounds at Lake Martin Community Hospital in Dadeville.

Six of the 15 teenagers were released while the other nine were transferred to other medical facilities including Russell Medical Center in Alexander City, Tallapoosa Count, East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama and the hospital of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. Among the nine who are still hospitalized, four are stable and five are in critical condition.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency sergeant Jeremy Burkett, the person who opened fire is no longer a threat to the community. The identity of the suspect has yet to be released.
