John Collette joined Camey Elementary School in The Colony, Denton County, Texas, United States in July 2018 as a fourth-grade dual language teacher. In 2020, he was voted the Elementary School Teacher of the Year in the Best of Denton County publication.
While employed by the Lewisville Independent School District, Collette allegedly sexually assaulted a student, then 10. In the second week of April 2023, the child’s mother became suspicious of the teacher.
The parent reported Collett to The Colony Police Department, which immediately investigated the teacher. On April 19, 2023, officers from the department arrested the teacher and booked him into the Denton County jail in Denton, Denton County.
Collett was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child. His bond was set at $850,000.
A letter about the alleged abuse was sent to the parents of Camey Elementary School students. On April 20, 2023, counselors were made available.
The Lewisville ISD has placed Collett on administrative leave. He is not allowed at any district facility.
