Eric Michael McDermott, 59, of Meridian, Ada County, Idaho, United States worked for Fairmont Junior High School in Boise, Ada County as a geography teacher and a boys basketball coach. Aside from Meridian and Boise, he has lived in other parts of Idaho including Carmen, Nampa and Germantown.

From 1990 to 2011, McDermott had several speeding violations. In 2012, he got a divorce.

On March 21, 2020, McDermott was at this home with a boy, then 16. The teacher allegedly forced the boy to have sex with him and engage in oral sex.

The boy was McDermott’s student in 2019. The teacher allegedly contacted the boy through a dating hookup site and days before the alleged rape, the teacher allegedly sent nude photos to the boy.

On April 17, 2023, the Boise City Police Department arrested McDermott. On April 18, 2023, his bond was set at $1,000,000.

McDermott was booked into the Ada County Jail in Boise. He is facing felony charges of rape and sexual battery committed by lewd or lascivious acts against a 16- to 17-year-old minor.

As requested by McDermott’s attorney John David Merris, a preliminary hearing in case, which was originally set on April 27, 2023, was moved to May 18, 2023 at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise. Fairmont Junior High School put the teacher on administrative leave pending an investigation.
