Jasmine Michelle Murphey, 22, of College Park, Georgia, United States and around 50,000 people recently attended Orange Crush, an unpermitted beach event on Tybee Island, Chatham County, Georgia. It was the first time it was held on the island since 2018.
Since 1988, Orange Crush has been held annually for historically black colleges and universities. In 2021, the event relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, USA citing civil rights violations and political injustices.
On April 22, 2023, Murphey and several others allegedly attacked and robbed two women near the Tybee Pier and Pavilion on Tybee Island. The group was caught on video engaging in the attack on the beach against the two victims, who are a mother and a daughter.
Badly beaten, the mother had significant injuries to her face. She told Tybee Island Police Department officers that her purse had been stolen during the attack and her daughter was still missing.
Two officers took the mother a safe location to get her treatment. Another officer went to the beach and got her daughter.
On April 24, 2023, detectives determined that Murphey had shared videos of the attack on social media. In those posts, she implicated herself as a suspect while making a statement to the effect of “leaving her footprint” on Tybee Island.
On May 4, 2023, College Park Police Department officers arrested Murphey at work. At 10:34 a.m. on May 5, 2023, she was transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia and charged with one count of robbery and two counts of aggravated assault.
