Kayla Unbehaun, 15, of South Elgin, Kane County, Illinois, United States is the daughter of Ryan Iskerka, 43, and Heather E. Unbehaun, 40. He had full custody of Kayla but allowed Heather to have every other weekend with their daughter.

On July 4, 2017, Heather told her family she was going to a camping trip before leaving their residence in Wheaton, DuPage County, Illinois with Kayla. On July 5, 2017, Ryan went there to pick Kayla up but she and her noncustodial mother were nowhere to be found.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s office issued a kidnapping warrant for Heather weeks later. In November 2020, Kayla was featured in an episode of the Netflix show “Unsolved Mysteries”. 

Just before 7:30 p.m. on May 13, 2023, a woman at Plato’s Closet in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA recognized Heather from published media and called police. The tipster is an employee at the store.

It led to Heather’s arrest. She was booked into the Buncombe County Jail in Asheville.

Kayla was found and placed into the custody of the North Carolina Division of Social Services. She is expected to be reunited with her family in South Elgin soon.

Heather is expected to be extradited to Illinois where she will be charged with at least one count of child abduction. Her bond was set at $250,000.
