Following the fatal shooting of Nicholas, New Orleans Police Department homicide detectives worked diligently to build their case. Upon identifying McDaniel as the primary suspect, investigators secured an arrest warrant.

At around 8:55 a.m. on May 21, 2026, NOPD homicide detectives arrested McDaniel on the General De Gaulle Exit of US 90 West in New Orleans. The capture of the suspect was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies.

Assisting the detectives were the NOPD’s Violent Crime Abatement Intervention Team (VCAIT) and Gang Reduction Intervention Program (GRIP) units as well as the U.S. Marshals Service and the Louisiana State Police. After McDaniel’s arrest, he was transported to the Orleans Parish Justice Center where he has been booked on a charge of second-degree murder.

Reflecting on the arrest, Shawn expressed a mix of relief and profound grief. While he remained confident throughout the investigation—praising the NOPD for their methodical approach to securing evidence—he emphasized that this arrest is merely the beginning of a long legal process.

In the wake of this tragedy, the community has rallied to support the victim’s family. A GiveSendGo account established by Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) president Ken Kober has already raised over $13,000 toward its goal. The campaign has seen contributions from Cincinnati’s FOP Queen City Lodge, as well as Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval and his wife Whitney Whitis.

Shawn expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from his colleagues, friends, and the citizens of Cincinnati, noting that while the pain of such a loss is permanent, the community’s support is a vital part of the family’s long road to coping. For his family, the focus now shifts toward the courtroom. As they navigate this difficult period of mourning and therapy, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice for Nicholas.
