Ahmet Gashi, 42, of Serbia has been arrested. He is accused of killing professional boxer Kemal Kolenovic, who was a resident of Midwood, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States.

While Kolenovic was originally from Montenegro, he was of Albanian descent. He had just won New York’s welterweight boxing title when he was killed.

On December 31, 2006, Gashi was among the intoxicated men involved in a brawl in the Bronx. Kolenovic was one of the people who tried to break up the fight.

Gashi allegedly jumped in his Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle, hit the gas and plowed into several people including Kolenovic outside a bar on Belmont Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx. The Serbian man flew headfirst into a tree.

While Gashi fled the scene, Kolenovic was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in Belmont in the Bronx where he was pronounced dead. The Albanian-Montenegrin boxer was 28 and had a professional boxing record of 10 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws.

Gashi left the U.S. and hid in Europe. For almost two decades, he managed to avoid authorities.

In April 2024, the New York City Police Department received a tip that Gashi was in Kosovo. The U.S. Marshals Service was dispatched to join forces with local law enforcement in the country to apprehend him.

On the morning of December 13, 2024, Gashi was extradited from Kosovo to the U.S. In the evening, he arrived at Central Booking in the Bronx and was charged with second-degree murder.
