Kidane Haile

Katie shared a first-floor apartment on Norwood Avenue in Buffalo with her boyfriend Kidane Haile, 30. He is of Eritrean descent.

Haile worked as a college financial aid advisor for the University at Buffalo in Buffalo. On October 14, 2025, Katie gave birth to their son Noah.

On the morning of October 18, 2025, Haile allegedly fatally strangled Katie and set fire to their shared apartment in Buffalo while she and Noah were inside. At around 8:35 a.m., the Buffalo Fire Department responded to the scene and found her and her son unresponsive.

Both Katie and Noah were pronounced dead at the scene. Her death was determined to be homicide caused by asphyxia due to strangulation while his death is still under investigation.

Haile was taken to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo by ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation. On October 22, 2025, he was discharged from the hospital, arrested and booked into the Erie County Holding Center in Buffalo.

On October 23, 2025, Haile was indicted and arraigned for second-degree murder in Erie County Court for the death of Katie. After pleading not guilty to the charge, he was ordered held without bail.

“The university is aware of the serious charge against Kidane Haile,” the University at Buffalo stated. The university added that although it cannot comment on specific personnel matters, it has “a robust disciplinary process in place to address instances where an employee may have engaged in criminal activity”.
