John Dixon Clinkscales was born in Talladega, Talladega County, Alabama, United States to John Wilks Clinkscales and Norma Clara Horn Clinkscales. He was a charter and board member of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Clinkscales was also a member of the National Association of Accountants, the Troup Travelers Camping Club, the National Camping Organization and the Optimist Club. He was retired from Milliken and Company.
