Every Thanksgiving, eating too much is one of the things Americans try to avoid. However, the idea of following a strict idea every fourth Thursday of November is not advisable, according to an expert.
“This whole healthy Thanksgiving is a very, very bad idea,” Dr. Aaron E. Carroll told Daily Mail. A change in diet for one day will not have a substantial effect, the doctor pointed out.
Carroll is a physician and nutritionist at Indiana University’s School of Medicine. On the idea of having a healthy Thanksgiving, he noted, “That’s why it’s a holiday. It’s a day to relax, to enjoy yourself. Food is something to enjoy, not to worry about.”
People have 364 other days in the year to follow a normal eating pattern, Carroll said. He added that he himself will eat more pie on Thanksgiving than he would on a normal day.
On the other hand, Carroll does not advise drinking or eating too much to the point of getting sick. About restricting Thanksgiving food, a nutritionist at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center agreed with him.
Liz Weinady, RD, told the publication that her advice is to enjoy Thanksgiving by eating and then get back to normal healthy lifestyle after. She explained that panicking about food may result to “an all-or-nothing mentality.”
On the other hand, it is also not advisable to starve for a day to compensate in advance for a Thanksgiving binge, another expert said. Dr. Rekha Kumar told Newsweek, “I think a common mistake is not eating the entire day with the plan to overeat everything you can at the Thanksgiving meal.”
Kumar works at New York Presbyterian Hospital as a specialist in endocrinology and weight management. Her advice is to eat only eat the food that offer the most pleasure.
Meanwhile, boxing and MMA fans were surprised when Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao took to Facebook to share a photo of Conor McGregor and to ask the UFC the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion to stay fit on Thanksgiving. This led to rumors that the two will be in a boxing superfight in 2018.
On July 2, Pacquiao lost to Jeff Horn at “Battle of Brisbane” in Australia. On Aug. 26, McGregor lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. at “The Money Fight” in Nevada.
