“UFC on Fox 29” marked the 20th fight of Dustin Poirier in the UFC. He and Justin Gaethje headlined the event, which took place at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona on April 14, 2018.
Poirier and Gaethje competed in the lightweight division. Refereed by Herb Dean, the bout ended at 0:33 of Round 4 when Poirier knocked out Gaethje via punches.
After defeating Gaethje, Poirier improved his record to 23 wins and 5 losses. On the other hand, Gaethje’s record downgraded to 18 wins and 2 losses.
When Poirier made his UFC debut on January 1, 2011 at “UFC 125,” he defeated Josh Grispi via unanimous decision. Poirier went on to enjoy a winning streak, defeating Jason Young at “UFC 131” on June 11, 2011, Pablo Garza at “UFC on Fox 1” on November 12, 2011 and Max Holloway at “UFC 143” on February 4, 2012.
On May 15, 2012, Poirier had his first loss in the UFC. He was submitted by Chan Sung Jung via brabo choke at “UFC on Fuel TV 3.”
Aside from Chan, the other UFC fighters who defeated Poirier were Cub Swanson, Conor McGregor and Michael Johnson. The other fighters Poirier defeated in the UFC cage were Jonathan Brookins, Erik Koch, Diego Brandao, Akira Corassani, Carlos Diego Ferreira, Yancy Medeiros, Joseph Duffy, Bobby Green, Jim Miller and Anthony Pettis.
On May 13, 2017, Poirier faced Eddie Alvarez at “UFC 211.” The bout ended as a No Contest due to an accidental knee to the head of the grounded fighter.
On the other hand, “UFC on Fox 29” marked Gaethje’s third fight in the UFC. He made his promotional debut on July 7, 2017 at “The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale” where he knocked out Johnson via punches and knees.
Gaethje returned to the UFC cage on December 2, 2017. He was knocked out by Alvarez via knee at “UFC 218.”
In the co-main event of “UFC on Fox 29,” Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit, 33, of Albuquerque, New Mexico competed against Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira, 30, of Tres Rios, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the welterweight division. Oliveira submitted Condit via guillotine choke at 3:17 of Round 2.
