On October 29, 2018, ONE Championship held a worldwide conference call with former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, 32, of Kirkland, Washington, United States. On the call was ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
Johnson is considered the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist in the world today. Chatri declared, “Demetrious will inspire and change the world through the ONE platform.”
From September 22, 2012 to August 4, 2018, Johnson reigned as the UFC Flyweight Champion. In ONE Championship, he is expected to face reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, 29, of Baguio City, Philippines.
“It is my absolute pleasure to introduce Demetrious Johnson today, the newest ONE Championship athlete,” Chatri stated. “Demetrious is without a doubt pound-for-pound the greatest mixed martial artist in history. Joining ONE, Demetrious is just getting started, the best is yet to come.”
“He has achieved a lot for sure but there is more here in Asia for him,” the ONE Championship boss said of Johnson. “It is an honor for me to be working with Demetrious and give him a platform where he can showcase his skills. It is an honor for me to tell his story and make sure people know who he is and what he stands for.”
Johnson is not the only MMA fighter who recently moved from the UFC to ONE Championship. The organization announced that former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez, 34, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States has joined its roster weeks before confirming that the former UFC Flyweight Champion has done the same.
After three UFC bouts, Daichi Abe, 26, of Tokyo, Japan also moved to ONE Championship. On October 26, 2018, he made his promotional debut at “ONE: Pursuit of Greatness” at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar where he lost to Luis “Sapo” Santos, 38, of Belem, Para, Brazil.
