“Project Blue Book” Season 1 episode 2 titled “The Flatwoods Monster” aired on The History Channel on January 15, 2019. Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen) and Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey) investigated a UFO sighting in West Virginia, United States.
Will Downing (Kiefer O’Reilly) drew a photo of a 10-foot monstrous creature he claimed to have emerged from the ash from the fire in Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia. His mother Sarah Downing (Brooke Smith) released the photo to the media.
The photo spread around town and caused hysteria so Allen and Quinn were called to investigate. They found a fragment of the meteor rock that caused the commotion.
Dubbed the Flatwoods Monster, the monstrous creature turned out to be a great horned owl. What Will turned saw was a shadow of cast from the owl’s wings as it flew through the night sky along with the twisted branches of a tree in the woods.
Elsewhere, Susie Miller (Ksenia Solo) successfully lured Mimi Hynek (Laura Mennell) out of their house with the help of an accomplice (Currie Graham). Susie and Mimi went to an underground club, a place that is unlikely visited by the latter of her own volition.
For a second, Susie left Mimi alone. It was the perfect opportunity for Allen’s wife to realize that being in that underground club was against her conservative values.
Mimi was able to run out. But unbeknownst to her, somebody was in her house while she and Susie were outside.
Susie had an accomplice (Currie Graham) who successfully planted bugs in Allen and Mimi’s house. It turned she was a Russian spy and she can now listen to what Allen has to say particularly about the Project Blue Book operation.
Other characters seen in “The Flatwoods Monster” were General Hugh Valentine (Michael J. Harney), General James Harding (Neal McDonough), Joel Hynek (Nicholas Holmes), Evelyn Meyers (Mary Black) and Donnie (Christopher Rosamond). The episode also featured Beatrice Kitsos as Will’s sister, Ian Tracey as the fixer, Blake Stadel as the local sheriff, Billy Wickman as an orderly and Trevor Lerner and Brent Clark as townspersons.
