Police brutality in the United States can be solved by defunding the police, protesters are suggesting. According to Piers Morgan, 55, this idea will do more harm than good but it will benefit Donald Trump, 73.
If the government defunds the police, police budgets will be reduced and will be reallocated to public health, housing, education, youth services and other areas. It does not mean that the police will be totally erased.
“When we talk about defunding the police, what we’re saying is invest in the resources that our communities need,” Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza told Chuck Todd on the NBC News show “Meet the Press.” She explained that much of policing in the U.S. now is generated and directed towards quality-of-life issues, homelessness, drug addiction and domestic violence but what the country needs is increased funding for housing, education and quality of life of over-policed and over-surveilled communities.
On June 7, 2020, a majority of the Minneapolis City Council agreed to dismantle the city’s police department. It was a response to the fatal arrest of George Floyd while in the custody of former Minneapolis Police Department officers Derek Chauvin, 44, Tou Thao, 34, Thomas Lane, 37, and J Alexander Kueng, 26, on May 25, 2020.
“Defunding the police is not just a bonkers idea that will make America more dangerous,” Morgan wrote on Daily Mail on June 10, 2020. “It’s also political suicide that will get Trump re-elected.”
In 2008, Morgan won the U.S. celebrity edition of “The Apprentice,” which was hosted by Trump. In 2016, although Morgan was not qualified to vote in the U.S., he said he would not vote for Trump but predicted that he would win.
Seeking reelection, Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, which is scheduled for November 3, 2020. He is running against former U.S. vice president Joe Biden, 77, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
Biden himself is not in favor of defunding the police. He told Norah O’Donnell on “CBS Evening News” on June 9, 2020 that what he supports is “conditioning federal aid to police based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness” and are able to demonstrate they can protect everybody in the community.
Trump is not willing to defund the police either. In fact, he is “appalled” by the movement campaigning for this idea, The Guardian quoted White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany as saying on June 8, 2020.
