Poland’s Jan Blachowicz beats Dominick Reyes in UAE, becomes UFC Light Heavyweight Champion

Jan Blachowicz, 37, of Cieszyn, Poland is the new champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the light heavyweight division. The Polish mixed martial artist earned the title at “UFC 253.”

Featuring 11 MMA matches, including two title bouts, “UFC 253” took place at the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on September 26, 2020 in the United States or September 27, 2020 in the UAE. Blachowicz faced Dominick “The Devastator” Reyes, 30, of Victorville, California, USA in the co-main event of the evening.

Blachowicz and Reyes competed for the then vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship title. Kevin Sataki served as the referee.

Sataki put a stop to the title bout after 4 minutes and 36 seconds in the second round. Blachowicz knocked out Reyes via punches.

Winning at “UFC 253” improved the professional MMA record of Blachowicz to 27 wins and 8 losses. It was his 10th win in the UFC.

On the other hand, it was Reyes’s second consecutive loss in the UFC. The Californian MMA fighter now has 12 wins and 2 losses.


Twelve countries were represented at “UFC 253” namely Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain and the U.S. Reyes was one of the seven fighters who represented the U.S. while Blachowicz solely represented Poland.

Born in Cieszyn on February 24, 1983, Blachowicz made his professional MMA debut on February 25, 2007. When he made his UFC debut on October 4, 2014, he knocked out Ilir “The Sledgehammer” Latifi, 37, of Malmo, Sweden.

Aside from Latifi and Reyes, the other UFC opponents Blachowicz defeated from 2014 to 2020 were Igor “The Duke” Pokrajac, 41, of Zagreb, Croatia, Devin “Brown Bear” Clark, 32, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA, Jared “The Killa Gorilla” Cannonier, 36, of Anchorage, Alaska, USA, Jimi “Poster Boy” Manuwa, 40, of Morden, England, Nikita “The Miner” Krylov, 28, of Donetsk, Ukraine, Luke Rockhold, 35, of San Jose, California, USA, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, 40, of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil and Corey “Overtime” Anderson, 31, of Rockton, Illinois, USA.

Before joining the UFC, Blachowicz competed in Full Contact Prestige, Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki and World Absolute Fighting Championship. He was a KSW Light Heavyweight Champion.

Blachowicz is the 13th MMA fighter to hold the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship belt. It was previously held by Jon “Bones” Jones, 32, of Rochester, New York, USA, who vacated it on August 17, 2020.

In the main event of “UFC 253,” UFC Middleweight Champion Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya, 31, of New Zealand and Nigeria successfully defended his title from Paulo “Borrachinha” Costa, 29, of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Nigerian-Kiwi champion and Blachowicz won the Performance of the Night bonuses, which were presented by P3 portable protein pack, the official protein snack of the UFC.
