Vanessa Velasquez, 24, a model from San Salvador, El Salvador won the top crown in the 13th edition of Reinado de El Salvador. The coronation night took place at the Auditorio Fepade in San Salvador.
Velasquez bested 11 other candidates. As the grand winner, she will represent El Salvador in Miss Universe 2020.
In 2019, Velasquez had the opportunity to work for Dior in Paris, France. The San Salvador native has been modelling since she was 11 years old.
The newly crowned Miss Universe Salvador 2020 speaks Spanish and English. She recently earned her bachelor’s degree in integrated marketing communications from Escuela de Comunicación Mónica Herrera in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.
The second highest title was given to Levi Maria Toney Flores, 26, San Vicente. She will represent the country in Miss Intercontinental 2020.
Also from San Salvador, Tiffany Katota, 23, won the third highest crown. She will represent the country in Reina Hispanoamericana 2020.
Alexandra Torres, 27, and Kenia Rivas, 24, were the respective first and second runners-up. They are both from San Salvador, as well.
Miss Universe El Salvador 2019 Zuleika Soler Aragón, 26, and Reina Hispanoamericana El Salvador 2019 Cristina Perdomo attended the coronation night to crown Velasquez and Toney, respectively. Soler was unplaced in Miss Universe 2019, which was won by Zozibini Tunzi, 27, of South Africa.
Perdomo was not able to compete internationally. She was replaced by Gabriela Acevedo, 25, who was unplaced in Reina Hispanoamericana 2019, which was won by Regina Peredo Gutiérrez, 22, of Mexico.
If Velasquez wins Miss Universe 2020, she will be the beauty pageant’s first titleholder from El Salvador. The highest placement a representative from the country had in the contest was earned by Miss Universe 1955 first runner-up Maribel Arrieta.
After Arrieta, only three candidates from El Salvador placed in Miss Universe. Carmen Figueroa finished in Top 12 in 1975 while both Eleonora Carrillo and Milena Mayorga finished in the Top 10 in 1995 and in 1996, respectively.
