Ivonne Cerdas is Miss Costa Rica 2020, crowned in Nunciatura, San José

Ivonne Cerdas Cascante, 27, was crowned Miss Costa Rica 2020 on November 18, 2020. Hailing from San José, Costa Rica, she bested nine other finalists.

Hosted by Walter Campos, Marilin Gamboa and Miss Costa Rica 2019 Paola Chacón, the Miss Costa Rica 2020 coronation night took place at Estudio Marco Picado in Nunciatura, San José Province, San José, Costa Rica. Due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there was no in-person attendance and the candidates and hosts wore face masks.

It was the 66th edition of Miss Costa Rica and it was aired on Teletica. There were 12 finalists originally but two withdrew from the competition before the coronation night due to personal reasons.

Miss Costa Rica 2008 María Teresa Rodríguez served as a judge. She was joined by national designer Edwin Ramírez, international stylist and makeup artist Henry Bastos Wood and musician and singer-songwriter Haury Cerdas.

Runner-up to Cerdas was Valeria Rees Loria, 27, of Heredia. Jennifer Barrantes Flores, 27, of Puntarenas was second runner-up.

Rees is a law student. Barrantes has a license in Jaco Bilingual Preschool Education.

 

Cerdas is a software engineer who graduated from Universidad Tecnica Nacional in Barrio Lourdes, Alajuela Province, Quesada, Costa Rica. She stands 5’9″and is also a model.

Miss Costa Rica 2020 marked the third time Cerdas competed in the national beauty pageant that selects Costa Rica’s representative to Miss Universe. She competed in 2012 and in 2015 and finished first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively.

As Miss Costa Rica 2020, Cerdas will represent Costa Rica in Miss Universe 2020. The date and venue of the international beauty pageant have yet to be announced.

If Cerdas wins Miss Universe, she will be the beauty pageant’s first ever titleholder from Costa Rica. The last time a candidate from the country placed was in 2018 when Natalia Carvajal, 30, of San José finished in the Top 10.
