Joel Luis Polanco, 41, of Hialeah, Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States has been arrested. He is charged with first-degree murder.
The Hialeah man is accused of entering the house of Jozory Caridad Espinosa‘s parents in Hialeah on March 5, 2021. He allegedly shot her multiple times at around 7:00 a.m. before fleeing in a dark gray 2018 Toyota Camry with tinted rear windows.
Espinosa suffered several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was 40.
Married in 2005, Polanco and Espinosa were going through a divorce, according to NBC Miami. A girl, 13, and a boy, 11, were inside her family’s home when he fatally shot her.
On March 6, 2021, Hialeah Police Department officers arrested Polanco. He is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami, Florida.
Before moving to Hialeah, Polanco lived in Miami. He also lived in Madison Lake, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, USA as well as in other parts of Florida including Miami Gardens, North Miami, Miramar and Opa Locka.
Polanco is an adult care nurse practitioner in Doral, Miami-Dade County. He earned his bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County.
In 2019, Polanco earned his master’s degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska-Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. In the same year, he authored “Shared Visits for Diabetes: Describing Methods to Control Hemoglobin.”
Like Polanco, Espinosa was also a nurse practitioner. In 2015, she graduated from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami.
The late nurse was affiliated with Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Florida and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. She was a primary care practitioner.
