Mona Grudt was nine days away from her 19th birthday when she was crowned Miss Universe 1990 at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles, California, United States on April 15, 1990. She was the beauty pageant’s first winner from Norway.
Three decades later, Miss Universe has yet to crown its second winner from Norway. That will change if Sunniva Høiåsen Frigstad, 20, Vennesla, Agder, Norway wins Miss Universe 2020 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Davie, Broward County, Florida, USA at 8:00 p.m. ET on May 16, 2021.
But if Frigstad fails to bring home the second Miss Universe crown for Norway, I know someone who can. Her name is Nora Emilie Nakken.
I rooted for Nakken when she represented Norway in Miss Earth 2020. Out of the 84 candidates, she was the most beautiful one for me.
That is why I was surprised when none of the Miss Earth 2020 judges saw that beauty that I saw in Nakken. She also spoke clearly about her advocacy during the competition so it is still a mystery to me why she neither won any of the preliminary events nor made it to the Top 20.
But I was delighted to know that Nakken is competing in Miss Universe Norway 2021. The world, the universe rather, needs to see what Norway has to offer and she is the best woman to represent the country in one of the biggest beauty pageants, if not the biggest, on Earth.
This is a comeback for Nakken. In 2016, she competed in Miss Universe Norway and was a finalist.
Some Miss Universe winners did not win in the national competition in their first try. The best example is Pia Wurtzbach, who was a runner-up in the Philippines’ national qualifier in 2013 and a semi-finalist in 2014 before finally becoming the country’s official candidate then the Miss Universe winner in 2015.
I believe Nakken is ready to represent Norway in Miss Universe after Frigstad. A professional model, the former sees how beauty pageants allow her to raise her voice and speak about topics that is important for her.
“This time, I hope I am more mature, confident and independent in addition to being more aware of the responsibilities and self-image I portrait through the competition,” Nakken recently told ALTATIS magazine. “This gives me a better edge and perspective of what it takes to be a role model that will make me a better contestant for the title of Miss Universe Norway 2021.”
Beautiful, bold and bright, Nakken should be crowned Miss Universe Norway 2021. Know more about her here:
