Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum, 43, of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and Renan “Problema” Ferreira, 31, of Santa Tereza de Goias, Goias, Brazil made their respective Professional Fighters League debuts at “PFL 3: 2021 Regular Season.” Featuring 10 matches, the mixed martial arts event took place at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States on May 6, 2021.
The main event of the evening was a heavyweight match between Werdum and Ferreira. In the first round, Werdum caught Ferreira in a triangle choke.
However, referee Keith Peterson put a stop to the heavyweight contest after 2 minutes and 32 seconds in the first round when Ferreira knocked out Werdum via punches. Before the proclamation of the winner, a slow-motion replay showed that Ferreira seemed to have tapped twice before knocking out Werdum but the taps were not visible from Peterson’s position.
In the post-fight interview, Werdum explained that he did feel the taps so he stopped choking Ferreira. Werdum said, “In my mind it was over because I feel when he tapped my shoulder.”
“This is why I stopped the fight,” Werdum explained. “I stopped and he keeps going to punch my head. The referee don’t see nothing. When you tap you have to stop the fight but it happened and everyone saw he tapped for sure and he knows he tapped.”
Four days after the heavyweight match between Werdum and Ferreira, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) overturned the result and declared it a No Contest. Werdum’s manager Ali Addelaziz took to Twitter to thank the New Jersey Athletic Commission and the PFL.
Werdum now holds a professional MMA record to 24 wins, 9 losses, 1 draw and 1 No Contest. Ferreira now has 6 wins, 2 losses, 0 draw and 1 No Contest.
Neither the NJSACB nor the PFL has explained why Werdum was not given a win instead of a No Contest. Meanwhile, watch the “PFL 3: 2021 Regular Season” highlights here:
