Brazil’s Julia Gama is Miss Universe 2020 first runner-up, loses to Mexico’s Andrea Meza

Julia Weissheimer Werlang Gama, 27, of Brazil almost won Miss Universe 2020. She was first runner-up.

Hosted by Mario Lopez, 47, and Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo, 28, the Miss Universe 2020 coronation night took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Broward County, Florida, United States on May 16, 2021. Including Gama, a total of 74 candidates competed for the crown.

In the end, Alma Andrea Meza Carmona, 26, of Chihuahua City, Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2020 while Janick Maceta del Castillo, 27, of Lima, Peru was her runner-up. Adline Mewis Quadros Castelino, 22, of India was third runner-up and Kimberly Marie Jimenez de Leon, 24, of La Romana, Dominican Republic was fourth runner-up.

It was the 69th edition of Miss Universe. The sponsors were the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, the city of Hollywood, LazadaSherri Hill, Mouawad, The Guitar Hotel, Olivia Quido Skincare, Jojo Bragais, Ema Savahl, InvisiSmart, iQIYI and Carnival.

Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi, 27, of South Africa co-hosted the national costume show with Nick Teplitz on May 13, 2021 and the preliminary competition with Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Tebow, 25, of South Africa on May 14, 2020. Jimenez won the Carnival Spirit Award while Thuzar Wint Lwin, 22, of Myanmar won the Best National Costume award and Lenka Nemer, 24, of Bolivia won the Impact Award.

During the coronation night, Tebow and Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega, 28, of Colombia served as expert analysts while Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst, 30, was a correspondent. The judges were Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera, 33, of Puerto Rico, Miss Universe 1997 Brook Lee, 50, of Hawaii, USA, Colombian economist Tatyana Orozco, 44, Korean-American actress Arden Cho, 35, Canadian television host Keltie Knight and American businesswomen Christine Duffy, 59, Sheryl Adkins-Green, 55, and Deepica Mutyala, 31.

Gama speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English, Mandarin and German. She was A Mais Bela Gaúcha 2012 and Miss Brasil Mundo 2014.

At Miss World 2014, Gama finished in the Top 11. From 2016 to 2019, she lived in China where she worked as a model and an actress and on August 20, 2020, she was appointed as Miss Universe Brazil 2020.
