Finland’s oldest national beauty pageant called Miss Suomi crowned its first queen in 1931 and since then, it has been held annually except from 1939 to 1944 due to World War II. The country’s second oldest national beauty pageant Suomen Neito was held from 1952 to 1955, from 1962 to 1963, in 1986 and from 1990 to 2007.

Traditionally, the Miss Suomi titleholder represents Finland in Miss Universe while the first and second runners-up represent the country in Miss World and Miss International, respectively. The country currently has two Miss Universe winners, one Miss World winner and one Miss International winner.

Suomen Neito 1952 Armi Kuusela, 86, was crowned the first ever Miss Universe on June 28, 1952 at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, United States. On October 14, 1957, the late Miss Suomi 1957 Marita Lindahl became the first ever Miss World from Finland at the Lyceum Ballroom in London, England, United Kingdom.

Miss Suomi 1972 second runner-up Anneli Björkling, 69, finished in the Top 7 in Miss World 1972 at the Royal Albert Hall in London on December 1, 1972 then became the first ever Miss International from Finland at the Exposition Hall Fairgrounds in Osaka, Japan on October 13, 1973. On July 19, 1975, Miss Suomi 1975 Anne Marie Pohtamo, 65, was crowned Miss Universe 1975 at the National Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador.

For the 90th edition of Miss Suomi, some changes were made. The age requirement was adjusted from 18-26 to 20-27.

On May 12, 2021, the 10 Miss Suomi 2021 finalists were introduced at The Folks Hotel Konepaja in Helsinki, Finland. They are all previous contestants of the Finnish national beauty pageant.
