James Parnell “Jamie” Spears, 69, would be removed as the court-order conservator of his daughter Britney Spears, 39, Judge Brenda Penny ruled in Los Angeles, California, United States on September 29, 2021. This will be until at least the next hearing when the judge is expected to decide whether or not Britney’s conservatorship should be ended.
John Zabel, a consultant based in California, will take over the position while Jodi Montgomery is still the conservator who oversees the personal affairs of Britney. The current situation in the singer’s conservatorship was untenable, Penny said.
Montgomery was brought on as a co-conservator in September 2019. On June 30, 2021, her lawyer Lauriann Wright told Us Weekly, “While she does not control Britney’s financial assets, she is responsible for her personal care, and if Britney wants any issue brought up to the court, Ms. Montgomery is and has always been ready, willing, and able to do so.”
On July 14, 2021, Britney told Penny that she was extremely scared of her father, who became her conservator in 2008. The singer said, “I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse.”
During the hearing, Penny approved the resignation of Britney’s court-appointed attorney Samuel D. Ingram III, who started handling the singer’s case in 2008. Britney then selected former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart as Ingram’s replacement.
“It’s been a lot of hard work,” Rosengart said outside the court in Los Angeles after Jamie was suspended as Britney’s conservator on September 29, 2021. “It’s been intense. I’m proud. Britney’s proud.”
Rosengart went on to thank Brithey’s supporters and said the support of the #FreeBritney movement has been instrumental to the extent that it allowed his firm to carry the ball across the finish line. On September 30, 2021, Jamie’s attorney Vivian L. Thoreen said in a statement obtained by Yahoo! Entertainment, “Mr. Spears loves his daughter Britney unconditionally.”
“For 13 years, he has tried to do what is in her best interests, whether as a conservator or her father,” the statement continued. “This started with agreeing to serve as her conservator when she voluntarily entered into the conservatorship. This included helping her revive her career and re-establish a relationship with her children.”
Britney and Sam Asghari, 27, started dating in 2016 and got engaged on September 12, 2021. After her father was suspended as her conservator, she took to Instagram to tell her supporters that she still has a lot of healing to do.
