Who is the incumbent mayor of Boston?

Kim Michelle Janey is the 30th and incumbent mayor of Boston. She assumed office as the Boston City Council president in January 2020.

On March 22, 2021, 29th Boston mayor Martin Joseph Walsh resigned following his confirmation as the U.S. Secretary of Labor. As the Boston City Council president, Janey became the acting mayor of the city.

During the primary election for Boston mayor in September 2021, she ranked fourth out of eight candidates. Michelle Wu and Annissa Essaibi George ranked first and second, respectively, making them the two candidates who would compete in the general election.
