Cherie Gil passed away at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States at 4:48 a.m. on August 5, 2022. The singer and actress from the Philippines was 59.
Gil succumbed to cancer of the reproductive system. On July 15, 2022, she took to Facebook to praise MSKCC, where she had been receiving treatment.
MSKCC opened in 1884 and it currently has around 500 beds. It is the largest and oldest private cancer center in the world.

Amid the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Gil left the Philippines and moved to New York to be closer to her children. In October 2021, she was diagnosed with a rare form of endometrial cancer, a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the lining of the uterus called endometrium.
“I just had to make sure that first and foremost, my mental, emotional, spiritual states were getting the priority,” Gil told Mega Magazine when she graced the cover of its 30th anniversary issue. “I was getting tired of myself and I was just so angry and unhappy so I sold everything and packed up and if you’re wondering if the villain is scared over the new role in life she’s facing? Yes.”
Gil is bald in the photos featured in the magazine’s edition, which was released on February 4, 2022. She revealed that aside from her hair, she had also gotten rid of all the clothes she had that symbolized a past life.
Born Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann in Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines, Gil is the only daughter of Eduardo de Mesa Eigenmann, 82, professionally known as Eddie Mesa, and Maria Rosa Francisca Catalina Gil-Eigenmann y Castellvi, 80, professionally known as Rosemarie Gil. Mesa’s father is Swiss-German while Rosemarie’s father is Spanish.
Mesa and Rosemarie have two sons namely Raphael John Gil Eigenmann, professionally known as Mark Gil, and Michael Edward Gil Eigenmann, 62, professionally known as Michael de Mesa. Mark died in Manila on September 1, 2014 at the age of 52 after battling cirrhosis of the liver stemming from cancer of the liver.
Mark was also an actor like Cherie, Michael and their parents. Cherie has three children namely Jeremiah David Gil Eigenmann, 35, Bianca Sophia Rogoff, 26, and Raphael Rogoff, 25.
