Alyssa Beth Steele, 36, of Anderson, Anderson County, South Carolina, United States is accused of practicing medicine without a license at seven nursing and assisted living facilities. She allegedly used someone else’s State of Georgia Board of Nursing license number to gain employment as a registered nurse in these facilities between January 15, 2020 and June 13, 2021.
At no time during Steele’s employment at the facilities did she have any training, qualifications or certifications of a registered nurse. Because of this, her actions could have physically or mentally injured the residents under her care.
Two of the facilities are located in Anderson, which are Brookdale Assisted Living Facility and Condor Health, and two are located in Easley, Pickens County, South Carolina, which are Easley Place Assisted Living Facility and Fleetwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Assisted Living. The others are Cascades Verdae Assisted Living Facility in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina, Iva Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Iva, Anderson County and Piedmont Post Acute in Piedmont, South Carolina.
All the facilities cooperated fully with investigators. The investigation was led by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of South Carolina attorney general Alan Wilson‘s office.
Steele has been arrested and booked into the Anderson County Detention Center in Anderson. She was served charges in Anderson County on October 24, 2022, in Greenville County on October 25, 2022 and in Pickens County on October 26, 2022.
The Anderson resident was charged with obtaining signature or property under false pretenses and financial identity fraud to obtain employment. She is also facing five counts of unlicensed practice as a registered nurse and seven counts of neglect of a vulnerable adult.
