  1. Her parents are refugees from Laos.
  2. She attended Mills College in Oakland and earned her bachelor’s degree in legal studies from the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California.
  3. When her son was an infant, they were homeless and they lived in her car to escape domestic violence. 
  4. From 2008 to July 2010, she worked for Merritt College in Oakland as a research and planning assistant.
  5. From 2011to 2014, she worked for UC Berkeley as a program analyst and events coordinator.
  6. From June 2014 to January 2019, she was the chief of staff to councilmember at large in Oakland. From June 2014 to June 2015, she was a council aide to council president pro tempore Rebecca Kaplan in Oakland.
