Tony Wilson, 54, of Sumter, South Carolina, United States worked at Crestwood High School in Sumter as the head coach of the school’s girls basketball team. While working there, he allegedly harassed and sexually assaulted two juvenile students.
“Anytime you get to the third round of the playoffs, you’ve had a successful year,” Wilson told High School Sports Report in March 2023. “We finished 20-7 on the year and anytime you win 20 games. you’ve had a good year.”
“We would have liked to make it to the state championship game but it didn’t work out for us this year,” Wilson continued. “Still, we had a successful year.”
Also in March 2023, Crestwood High School received a report from two juvenile students accusing Wilson of harassment and assault. The school placed the basketball coach on administrative leave and informed the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office about the complaints.
On April 4, 2023, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office issued arrest warrants for Wilson. On April 6, 2023, he resigned from his job as the Crestwood High School girls basketball team’s head coach.
On the same day, Wilson surrendered himself to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center in Sumter.
After posting a $75,000 surety bond, Wilson was released. He was charged with third-degree assault and battery, criminal sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of unlawful dissemination of obscene material to a person under 18 and two counts of criminal solicitation of a minor.
