Just two days after announcing that Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 29, of Australia and Vietnam has relinquished the ONE Lightweight World Champion, ONE Champion confirmed that the new champion will be crowned at “ONE: Conquest of Champions.” Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 34, of the Philippines and Amir Khan, 23, of Singapore will compete for the vacant title.
Nguyen was originally set to defend the ONE Lightweight World Championship title before 2019 he would not be able to do so due to a serious knee injury. ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong confirmed that the Vietnamese-Australian mixed martial arts superfighter is still the reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion and is welcome to compete again in the lightweight division in the future.
On November 23, 2018, Folayang and Khan will compete for the ONE Lightweight World Championship in the main event of “ONE: Conquest of Champions,” which will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. This will be the fourth and the last ONE Championship in the Philippines in 2018.
Representing Team Lakay, Folayang is coming off remarkable back-to-back unanimous decision victories over a pair of previously undefeated Russian grapplers. He defeated Kharun “Predator” Atlangeriev, 25, at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” on May 18, 2018 and Aziz Pahrudinov, 29, at “ONE: Reign of Kings” on July 27, 2018.
On November 11, 2016, Folayang captured the ONE Featherweight World Championship title at “ONE: Defending Honor,” dethroning Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, of Japan. On April 21, 2017, the Team Lakay fighter successfully defended the title from Ev “E.T.” Ting, 29, of New Zealand and Malaysia at “ONE: Kings of Destiny” but lost it to Nguyen at “ONE: Legends of the World” on November 10, 2017.
On October 6, 2018, Aoki and Ting will compete in a title-eliminator matchup at “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. The winner will be the challenger of the new ONE Lightweight World Champion, who will be crowned at “ONE: Conquest of Champions.”
Folayang currently holds a professional MMA record of 20 wins and 6 losses. On the other hand, Khan has 11 wins and 3 losses.
Representing Evolve MMA, Khan is riding a two-bout winning streak. In his most recent bout, which was at “ONE: Beyond the Horizon” on September 8, 2018, he submitted Folayang’s Team Lakay teammate Honorio “The Rock” Banario, 28.
