Jon Chris “Happy Feet” Corton, 26, of Philippines is one of the five Team Lakat fighters who will compete at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.” He will face Abdul “Abba” Hussein, 21, of Finland in the flyweight division.
In an exclusive interview at the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines on February 18, 2018, I asked Corton to give a message to Hussein. The Team Lakay fighter said, “Abdul, good luck.”
“Good luck to the both of us,” Corton continued. “I know you have been training hard, so as me. So, may the best man win.”
Both excited and nervous, Corton does not want to disappoint the Filipino supporters who are rooting for him and the 10 other Filipino fighters on the “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” card. Like many mixed martial artists, he studies videos of his opponents’ previous fights before fight night.
“But if I can’t find any videos of their (previous) fights, we have to fight intelligently,” Corton said. “We need to adapt during the fight.”
In the case of Hussein, Corton noticed that the Palestine-Finnish fighter tends to focus on earning points in his fights. The Team Lakay fighter said, “His style is like point system.”
“So definitely, he throws a lot of punches and kicks,” Corton said of Hussein. “(He may) try to make a point, take me down, do some ground control. The difference with us is that I’m not just looking for points to win.”
“I’m planning to finish the fight,” the Team Lakay fighter added. “So, maybe that’s what’s separating us from each other.”
“Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila on March 15, 2019. It will be Corton’s second outing in the promotion.
On September 21, 2018, Corton made his Brave CF debut at “Brave 16” at the Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates where he defeated Hussein “Iron” Ayyad, 24, of Bahrain via unanimous decision. The latter will face Jason “Python” Vergara, 22, of the Philippines in the bantamweight division at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.”
