Dustin Johnson is 2020 Masters Tournament champion, beats Im Sung Jae, Cameron Smith

Dustin Johnson, 36, of South Carolina, United States emerged as the champion of the 2020 Masters Tournament. Im Sung Jae (임성재), 22, of Jeju Island, South Korea and Cameron Smith, 27, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia were the runners-up.

The 2020 Masters Tournament took place at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, USA from November 12-15, 2020. It is the 84th edition of the major professional golf championship.

Established on March 22, 1934, the Masters Tournament is traditionally held in the first week of April. The 2020 edition was postponed because of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

With a score of 268, 20-under-par, Johnson was five strokes ahead of Im and Smith. Both the Korean golfer and the Australian golfer, with a score of 273, 15-under-par, tied second.

Justin Thomas, 27, of Jupiter, Florida, USA scored 276, 12-under-par and placed fourth. Dylan Frittelli, 30, of Johannesburg, South Africa and Rory McIlroy, 31, of Holywood, Northern Ireland had a score of 277, 11-under-par and tied fifth.

As the 2020 Masters Tournament champion, Johnson won $2,070,000. It was his first Masters Tournament win and second major championship win following 2016 U.S. Open victory.

 

Johnson is the number 1 ranked golfer in the world. He established the record of the lowest score in the history of the Masters Tournament.

Tiger Woods, 44, of Jupiter who won the Masters Tournament in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2019, tied 38th in the 2020 edition. Johnson is the first number 1 ranked golfer to win the tournament since Woods in 2002.

 

Born in Columbia, South Carolina on June 22, 1984 to Scott Johnson and Kandee Johnson, Dustin attended Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, South Carolina. A former club pro, Scott took Dustin to the range for the first time in 1988.

Dustin earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. He met his coach Allen Terrell at the university.

From September 17–20, 2020, Dustin competed in the 120th US. Open, which was held at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, USA. He tied sixth with Thomas, McIlroy, Will Zalatoris, Tony Finau, Zach Johnson and Webb Simpson.
