Beauty pageant experts often say Miss Universe is not looking for a model. The international beauty pageant is known for emphasizing the importance of being outspoken and aware of social issues.

Once the list of Miss Universe candidates is revealed, beauty pageant experts and fans start sharing their lists of favorites and predictions. In the 69th edition of the competition, some of the candidates who were often mentioned in this list ended up unplaced.

Some lists were changed and more predictions were revealed after the national costume show on May 13, 2021 and the preliminary competition on May 14, 2021. However, none of the pageant experts and fans really saw what transpired during the one-on-one closed-door interview of the 74 Miss Universe 2020 candidates with the all-female jury.

This means that there is a possibility that some candidates who performed very well in the preliminary round did poorly in the interview. The judges were Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera, 33, of Puerto Rico, Miss Universe 1997 Brook Lee, 50, Colombian economist Tatyana Orozco, 44, Korean-American actress Arden Cho, 35, Canadian television host Keltie Knight and American businesswomen Christine Duffy, 59, Sheryl Adkins-Green, 55, and Deepica Mutyala, 31.

From 74 candidates, only 21 candidates were chosen to compete in the final swimsuit round on May 16, 2021 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Broward County, Florida, United States. Here are 10 early favorites who did not make it to the first cut:
