Reth Sarita, 25, was crowned Miss Universe Cambodia 2020 in the evening of November 26, 2020. She bested 19 other candidates.
Born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Reth is an actress, a model and a television presenter who aspires to be the first female film director in her country. Currently, she is a student of the Royal University of Law and Economics in Phnom Penh where she is pursuing a masters degree in international relations.
Fluent in both Khmer and English, Reth attended the private French primary school Lycée Français René-Descartes and earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Vanda Institute. Both schools are also in the Cambodian capital.
When Reth was 17 years old, she started competing in beauty pageants and talent competitions, which led her to her role in the BBC Media Action’s TV series “Love9.” In 2018, she told the Khmer Times that the stories in the show were about sexual reproductive health and she helped to promote and educate viewers about the topic.
In 2016, Reth starred in the short film “The Dinner” and the feature film “Mind Cage.” In the same year, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Cambodia honored her with the Youth Champion Award for her advocacy in promoting gender equality, reproductive health rights and prevention against gender-based violence in her home country.
As a model, Reth has worked with international brands and companies including KFC, Swatch and Emirates Airlines. She starred in the horror films “Hex” and “The Spell,” which were released in the United States on September 6, 2019 and on October 8, 2019, respectively.
“Hex” was also released in the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Mexico, Poland, the Philippines, Japan and Taiwan. Directed by Rudolf Buitendach, the film also starred Ross McCall, Jenny Boyd, Adrian Hough, Kelly Blatz, Philip Philmar and Steve Bakken.
Directed by Amir Dubey, “The Spell” premiered at the Cambodian International Film Festival on March 9, 2019. Among Reth’s co-stars in the horror film were So Ramphoum, Sveng Socheata and Thanet Thorn.
Presented by Ganzberg, the Miss Universe Cambodia 2020 coronation night took place at the Bayon TV Steung Meanchey in Phnom Penh and aired live on Bayon TV. It was the second edition of the national beauty pageant that selects the country’s official representative to Miss Universe.
Runner-up to Reth was Chhun Raksa while Dy Sorakheta, Neth Raksa and Suon Pisey were the respective second, third and fourth runners-up. Shuchi Heang, Chan Malis, Mach Davy, Prasath Davih and Lim Langly finished in the Top 10.
Miss Universe Cambodia 2018 Rern Nat and Miss Universe Cambodia 2019 second runner-up and Dream Girl of the Year International 2019 Chan Sotima served as judges. They were joined by Miss Universe Cambodia national director Romyr Libo-on, Philippine Embassy A.I. Myca Magnolia M. Fischer, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts deputy director general Ek Bunthia, Ganzberg brew master Franz Josef Brune, Animal Mama Siem Reap founder Yulia Khouri, V Syndicate general manager Sam Clayton, The Prive Pawn chief executive director Marya Na, Rottanak Collection founder and owner Yun Rottanak, CSN J CEO Chin Samsang, Cambodia International Models founder and CEO Men Nimulroat and Kong Visal.
Heng Keo Nita, Try Davaruth and Thoung Mala hosted the ceremony, which also featured performances by FGG, Mongie Stars and Cambodia Dance Sport Federation. At the end of the event, Reth was crowned by Miss Universe Cambodia 2019 Somnang Alyna, who was unplaced in Miss Universe 2019.
Before winning the title, Reth won two special awards, namely Best in Interview and Best Advocacy. On November 10, 2020, she won the talent competition through her martial arts performance.
If Reth wins Miss Universe 2020, she will be the first Cambodian woman to place and win in the international beauty pageant. She is the fourth woman to represent her country in the competition.
