In Tulsa, Oklahoma, Carlton Gilford shoots James McDaniel, Lundin Hathcock

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States on April 18, 2023, James McDaniel, 55, and Lundin Wade Hathcock, 35, were fatally shot. The suspect Carlton Jefferson Gilford, 61, is a homeless man.

At around 9:40 a.m. that day, Gilford walked up behind Hathcock, who was sitting at a desk in the Rudisill Regional Library in Tulsa. The former allegedly shot the latter in the back of the head.

Shortly after, Gilford went to a nearby QuikTrip convenience store and shot McDaniel in the back of the head and fired shots at a security guard and another person at the store. After falling to the ground, McDaniel was shot again by the gunman.

While McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene, Hathcock was rushed to a hospital in Tulsa. At 5:15 p.m. that day, the latter died in the hospital.

When Tulsa Police Department officers arrived at the crime scene, they found Gilford standing outside the store. The gunman admitted to shooting McDaniel and Hathcock.

Gilford was arrested and charged with one count of malicious intimidation or harassment, two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of shooting with intent to kill. The malicious intimidation or harassment charge is Oklahoma’s version of a hate crime.

On June 23, 2023, Gilford will be back in court. He is being held without bond.
