Stockholm, Sweden’s Khamzat Chimaev earns 1st UFC win at ‘UFC on ESPN 13’ on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Khamzat “Borz” Chimaev, 26, of Stockholm, Sweden successfully made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The undefeated Chechen-Swedish mixed martial artist was one of the “UFC on ESPN 13” winners.

Training at AllStars Training Center in Stockholm, Chimaev made his professional MMA debut in 2018. Before joining the UFC, he competed in the International Ring Fight Arena, Fight Club Rush and BRAVE Combat Federation.

Featuring 11 MMA matches, “UFC on ESPN 13” took place on the UFC Fight Island on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi on July 15, 2020 in the United States or July 16, 2020 in the UAE. In the sixth bout, Chimaev fought John “The Welsh Wrecking Machine” Phillips, 35, of Swansea, Wales in the middleweight division.

Herb Dean served as the referee. He put a stop to the middleweight contest after 1 minute and 12 seconds in the second round when Chimaev submitted Phillips via D’Arce choke.

 

This is the second time Chimaev won a professional MMA bout via submission. Winning at “UFC on ESPN 3” improved his professional MMA record to 7 wins and 0 loss.

On the other hand, it was Phillips’ fourth loss in the UFC. He now has 22 wins and 10 losses.

“UFC on ESPN 13” is the second UFC event to take place on the UFC Fight Island. Twelve countries were represented namely Brazil, Canada, England, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Romania, Sweden, Tunisia, the UAE, the U.S. and Wales.

Chimaev solely represented Sweden. Phillips was one of the two representatives of Wales.

In the co-main event, Tim Elliott, 33, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, USA defeated Ryan “Baby Face” Benoit, 30, of Dallas, Texas, USA via unanimous decision. They fought in the flyweight division.

In the main event, Calvin Kattar, 32, of Methuen, Massachusetts, USA fought Dan “Dynamite” Ige, 28, of Honolulu, Hawaii, USA in the featherweight division. The former won via unanimous decision.
