Paul Terry Murdaugh attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, United States. He is one of the two sons of Richard “Alex” Alexander Murdaugh and Margaret “Maggie” Kennedy Branstetter Murdaugh.

Alex is Randolph Murdaugh III and Elizabeth Alexander Murdaugh‘s son and Maggie is Terry Lee Branstetter and Kennedy Hubbard Branstetter‘s daughter. Here are 13 more things about Paul:

  1. He grew up in Hampton, South Carolina and went to Thomas Heyward Academy in Ridgeland, South Carolina.
  2. He and his family enjoyed spending their summers at their beach house on Edisto Island in Charleston County, South Carolina. They own a family hunting lodge in Islandton, Colleton County, South Carolina.
  3. He was 3 years younger than his brother Richard “Buster” Alexander Murdaugh Jr.
  4. On December 25, 2017, he was intoxicated when he allegedly insisted on driving himself and his then girlfriend Morgan Doughty from a party then lost control of his truck, which landed on its side in a ditch. She called 911 but he allegedly hung up the phone and instead called his paternal grandfather and his father. Before police arrived, his parents showed up and cleared his truck, which had guns and beer cans, according to Doughty.
  5. On February 23, 2019, he used Buster’s identification card to buy alcohol at a convenience store before meeting Doughtry and their friends Mallory Beach, Anthony Cook, Connor Cook and Miley Altman at their beach house on Edisto Island.
  6. On February 24, 2019, he, Beach, Anthony, Connor and Altman were allegedly intoxicated while aboard the 17-foot, Sea Hunt center-console boat owned by his parents. He drove the boat and it crashed into the Archers Creek Bridge in Port Royal, Beaufort County, South Carolina that led to the death of Beach, whose body was found on March 3, 2019.
  7. On April 18, 2019, he was indicted and charged with three felony counts of boating under the influence, including causing the death of Beach and seriously injuring two other passengers.
  8. On May 6, 2019, he pleaded not guilty to  one count of boating while under the influence and two counts of boating while under the influence causing great bodily injury and was released on a $50,00 recognizance bond. 
  9. On July 29, 2019, his bond was changed which allowed him to travel within South Carolina rather than confined to the 14th Judicial Circuit.
  10. In August 2019, he entered the University of South Carolina to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminology.
  11. On May 26, 2020, he was pulled over for speeding in Adams Run, Charleston County.
  12. On May 6, 2021, he left his father a voicemail saying, “I am still in EB (Edisto Beach) because when you get here we have to talk. Mom found several bags of pills in your computer bag.”
  13. On June 7, 2021, he and his mother were fatally shot in their family hunting lodge in Islandton. He was 22. He was supposed to attend a hearing on June 10, 2021 for the wrongful death suit of Beach. Also on June 10, 2021, his paternal grandfather died at age 81.
